In the Classroom

In Term 1 our whole school Integrated Study topic was the Commonwealth Games.  Our students travelled into Wodonga Senior Secondary College to watch the Queen's Baton relay pass through Wodonga. Afterwards the Senior College students had some different sports for us to have a go at.

We had a visit from Mark Fountain and Luke Preston, who have both represented Australia in Commonwealth Games.  Mark won a bronze medal at the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne in 2006 in the 1500metres and Luke represented Australia in the Duathlon. Luke is now the manager of Supatramp in Wodonga, who organised the visit.  They spoke to the students about the importance of being active and playing sport.

Students also received a visit from Lincoln Budge. He is an ex student of the school and returned to talk to the students about his sporting achievements since becoming a paraplegic at the age of 22. He discussed his successes while participating in water skiing, wheelchair basketball and snow skiing. His motivational talk allowed students to see that people can overcome adversity to achieve amazing things in their lives. Each class participated in a wheelchair basketball session over the day. It was a valuable experience for all involved and we thank Lincoln for volunteering his time to deliver this to the students.

In term 2, the Senior students studied government and the Junior students - community. much of the classroom activity for the seniors was researching our government - how it works, what it does, who the different people and roles are. This culminated in a 4 day visit to Canberra.  It was an amazing camp with the students visiting Parliament House, Old Parliament House, the War Memorial, Questacon, the Australian Institute of Sport as well as seeing lots of the beautiful scenery and places around our national capital.

Our Junior students researched lots of different community organisations and talked about how important it is to help out in the community.  They were very lucky to have a visit from our local SES Truck and Volunteers Jackie and Shane.

Term 3 means our whole school topic is Invent to Learn!! Our students are having lots of fun being inventive and creative and also learning about Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM).
