Auslan Specialist Program

Auslan

In 2024, our school moved to Auslan as our second language offering. This move was to ensure that our school remains inclusive, recognising that our students are most likely to find themselves in a situation where they may need to communicate with a deaf or hard of hearing individual.

Students learn about:

  • Deaf culture and etiquette
  • Hand shapes and body language
  • Key word signs, sentence structure and fluency

Our students begin with learning to sign colours, animals, letter of the alphabet and even work up to signing the National Anthem to sign at assembly.

Keeping students physical and outdoors is important to us. The explicit teaching of specific sports skills is critical to developing balance, positive mindsets and core/upper body strength. Our students have access to high quality equipment and resources to learn the basics of athletics, sports and prime physical health.

Students learn about the:

Mindfulness, empathy and gratitude are essential skills that all young people must develop to become effective members of society. Our school recognises this and devotes critical teaching time to the explicit building of these skills. Each term, students deep dive into an area of the Resilience Project.

The harvesting and planting of seeds is important to our school, ensuring we have particular produce throughout the year. We have an active parent body in helping us maintain our vegetable gardens. Our students have voice in what is cooked in the kitchen and the produce to be used.
